Brian Schmidt, DDS, MD, PhD

Dr. Brian Schmidt is the Director of the Bluestone Center for Clinical Research and Director of the NYU Oral Cancer Prevention and Treatment Center. He is an expert in the comprehensive surgical management of oral cancer and head and neck pathology.

Dr. Schmidt has lectured nationally and internationally and written extensively on the management of head and neck cancer. His clinical and research program are closely integrated to offer patients the most advance treatment. He leverages the personnel and research expertise of the NYU Oral Cancer Prevention and Treatment Center to ensure the highest level of patient care.

His primary areas of research interest are the identification of diagnostic and predictive oral cancer biomarkers and the etiology of cancer symptoms and cancer pain. Dr. Schmidt, as Principal Investigator, has been consistently funded by the National Institute of Health, including the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research and the National Cancer Institute.

Prior to joining BCCR, Dr. Schmidt was a Professor at the University of California, San Francisco and the Director of the Oral and Maxillofacial Oncology Fellowship and the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Training Program. He was Vice Chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Dr. Schmidt is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and board certified in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr Schmidt received his DDS, MD and PhD in oral biology from the University of California, San Francisco. He is a member of several national and international organizations including American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, American Association for Dental Research, International Association for Dental Research, International Academy of Oral Oncology, International Association for the Study of Pain, and the American Pain Society.
