HIV Associated Oral Warts Study
Do you suffer from multiple oral warts?
If you suffer from multiple oral warts associated with HIV infection and are 18 years of age or older, you may qualify to participate in a research study being conducted at the NYU Bluestone Center for Clinical Research.
The study is testing the effectiveness of new treatment for oral warts in adults who are HIV positive. The purpose of this study is to determine if natural human interferon alpha lozenges are safe and effective in treating HIV related oral warts. Your participation will involve six visits, which will take place over approximately seven months. Qualifying participants will be compensated for time and travel expenses. Viral lesions of the mouth in individuals infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are common and may be indicative of disease progression. One of the causes of oral lesions is the human papillomavirus (HPV), a DNA linked virus which induce lesions in the oral soft tissues such as warts. Oral warts do cause a significant reduction in quality of life due to their harmful effect on subject appearance and potential for causing discomfort during routine activities such as eating and talking.
It has been reported that the prevalence of oral warts increases among the patients who were being treated with antiretroviral therapy (HIV medication). Eligible participants are being asked to participate in this study because they are HIV positive and/or on combination antiretroviral therapy (HIV medication) and have warts on your mouth and lips. s Study Status: This study is closed for enrolment.
