Dr. Brian L. Schmidt Kicks Off Cancer Pain Awareness Month at NYU Cancer Center

September 7, 2011

To kick off NYU Langone Medical Center’s September Pain Awareness Month, Dr. Brian L. Schmidt, professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery and director of the Bluestone Center for Clinical Research at the NYU College of Dentistry, and of physiology and neuroscience at the NYU School of Medicine, will discuss cancer pain on Doctor Radio on Sirius XM  on Wednesday,  September 7th,  from 12-1pm.  Dr.  Schmidt will also be the keynote speaker at the NYU  Cancer Center, 160 E. 34th St., Room 1121, on Thursday, September 8th,  from 4pm-5pm.  Dr. Schmidt’s clinical focus is on head and neck cancer; his  research focuses  on mechanisms of cancer pain.

Dr. Schmidt will discuss the current understanding of cancer pain, symptom management, and care of oral cancer patients. He will explain the importance of palliation for the cancer patient, in terms of quality of life as well as survival.

Cancer pain depends on the type of cancer, the location of the cancer, and the response of the patient. It typically occurs with other symptoms such as fatigue, depression, and sleep deprivation. Dr. Schmidt will illuminate novel approaches to treating cancer pain, including viral therapy. Oral cancer tends to be the most painful of all cancers. There are approximately 40,000 new cases of oral cancer each year.

“Treating cancer pain has been frustrating and we have made little headway,” says Dr. Schmidt, “and cancer pain and cancer symptomatology are not areas of research that are strongly supported.”

The Bluestone Center’s Cancer Research Initiative is dedicated to helping patients who suffer from symptoms related to cancer and cancer treatment.  The initiative will also provide mentorship for the next generation of healthcare providers and scientists in this important but neglected field.

The Bluestone Center for Clinical Research is the largest clinical research center located in a dental college in the country. It is dedicated to the development, implementation, performance, and analysis of clinical research in an environment that combines academic excellence with industry’s efficiency and speed.
